Written for the Gateship's Wednesday Shorts 'Singularity' Challenge Jack tested the door and found it open, he'd been knocking on it for the last two minutes and no one had answered, but he knew they were there, he suspected that most of the street knew they were there, with all the noise coming through the open window. "Hello?" he called, as he stepped into the house, wincing as a particularly piercing scream rang out from up the stairs. "Doc? Carter?" he bellowed over the racket. "Up here Colonel, come on up." Jack heard Janet Fraiser yell in between the shrieks. He made his way up the stairs and along the landing to the room from where all the racket was coming. He tapped on the half open door. "Do I need to phone the SGC and warn them of a foothold situation? If my eyes don't deceive me it appears as if we've been invaded by Smurfs." "Sorry Colonel we got a bit carried away." Sam said, with a broad smile on her face, whilst Cassandra giggled nervously and Janet tried to look composed and failing, as all three of them had sky blue paint dripping off their hair. Jack looked at them. "You do realize that there's more paint on you than on the walls? I don't think you've grasped the technique." "Would you care to show us then Colonel?" Janet asked innocently, Cassie's chosen a lovely color for her room, don't you think?" "Jack hunkered down to Cassie's eye level. "Yep, it's going to look really nice when you actually get some of this paint where it's supposed to be. Come on I'll show you how it's done." Jack stood up his knees cracking loudly." Hand me your brush, Carter. " Jack held our his hand. "Certainly, sir." Sam reached out with the brush and passed it over to the Colonel who was examining the walls. "Yeugh! Carter, by the damned handle." Jack dropped the brush from his slippery hand and watched as it hit the floor splashing paint up the legs of his faded khakis. "Now, Captain, is that anyway for an officer to behave?" Jack said, and bent down to pick up the offending article. "Probably not, sir, sorry, Colonel." Sam had a very unconvincing look of contrition on her face. Which didn't last long as Jack raised the brush and painted a blue stripe from her forehead to her chin. "Colonel, I do believe that was a declaration of hostilities, wouldn't you say so Cassie?" Janet said, loading her brush with paint. Cassie nodded, still giggling. "Get him!" Sam ordered, as they charged, brushes flying, towards the heavily outnumbered opposing force. Later that afternoon when everybody had been in the shower for a well needed scrub. Sam and Cassie sat in the living room watching the TV and chatting. Jack approached Janet in her kitchen as she prepared dinner. "So, Doc, How're things going?" "Good, sir, we all need time to adjust but I think things will work out fine." Janet looked up at him as she tore the lettuce for the salad. "It's a big responsibility for you." "Yes it is, but I'm not alone, Sam has been great in getting Cassie settled, and I know it's been hard on her too and the SGC have been very supportive. I really think we'll be okay." "Yeah, I think so too." Jack smiled and patted Janet gently on the shoulder. "I'd best go and make sure that Carter's not brainwashing the poor kid with the Discovery Science channel." Sam and Cassie looked up as Jack walked into the room. "Hi, sir, we were just about to watch a documentary on Black Holes." "You know Carter there is actually more to life than physics." Jack, plonked himself on the couch next to Cassie. "Now, Cass, have you ever heard of a highly educational show called "The Simpsons?……." The end
